What do you dislike?

One area of improvement is the upgrade process. Upgrading from one version to another can sometimes causes issues.

What do you like best?

Yellowfin provides excellent value. It is very well price in comparison to other BI tools. Considering the functionality that comes with Yellowfin this provides very good value for money. End users find it easy to use and the development pipeline continues to bring new features which enhance the overall user experience. It's been built for cloud deployment (no local client to install) which makes it easy to deploy.

What do you dislike?

Being web-base does have its drawbacks, such as the amount of clicking required to create content and link everything together in a dashboard. It would be great to have an option to do a bit more scripting to generate content for the more technical savvy developers, and still maintain the current UI for business users or those who are happy within the point-and-click interface.

What do you like best?

The Yellowfin tool is very easy to learn, and is helped by the training materials available online via YouTube and the Yellowfin University. It takes very little time to go from a data model to creating some visually appealing graphs and charts to tell a story to the audience about the data being presented.

Being a web-based tool also makes it available anywhere with an internet connection, for both users and developers. One of the challenges with other tools is getting access while "on the go", with VPN's and other technologies being required to gain access. A lot of the time the solution to the "on the go" challenge is to just send static reports via email which defeats the purpose of a BI tool.

Like any tool there are limitations, although with Yellowfin we have always found a way to get around some of the technical challenges provided by our users. Whether the solution is created in the database, view or report, there is always a way to resolve any challenge put to us within Yellowfin. The user community also offers a good source of information for challenges that come our way.

Yellowfin is very easy to get up and running in a cloud environment. This makes evaluation simple and cost-effective for those who want to learn more about the tools capabilities. Also make use of the Yellowfin University and other online tutorials available on YouTube to get the most out of the tool.

What do you dislike?

Overall very little, going back 5 years some of the administration and set up of users was slightly cumbersome, however Yellowfin has quickly addressed these and in recent releases we are finding it is exceeding our expectations.

What do you like best?

We've found Yellowfin to be an excellent front end to our Health Fund reporting solution. The Yellowfin end user visualisation means take up of the solution by managers and staff has been strong, and Yellowfin have shown an excellent ability to translate their vision into reality over the past 5 years. As a supplier of core technology to our solution set they have consistently exceeded our expectations.

Yellowfin has proven to be an excellent and committed partner. I'd recommend anyone seeking a BI capability inside their business, or a partner needing a visualisation reporting tool to build into their solution, to consider Yellowfin.

What do you dislike?

I used to be sad that support tickets had to wait until the next days because of the time difference from Australia to the US, but now that they have a stateside support team I have very little to complain about. Their support team is top notch and always willing to work on any issues we might have, or enhancements that we might need/want.

What do you like best?

I love how Yellowfin is easily adoptable for both business users (grad and drop reporting) and developers (javascript charts in 7.3+). Yellowfin has grown to a level where customization or white-labeling is not an issue, and the experience just keeps getting better with the newer versions. Having the ability to create any, and I mean any, type of visualization is key.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Consider this offering first on the quality of support you will receive. Second, consider this offering based on it's ease of use and flexibility. You won't find a more adoptable product out there for the average business user.

What do you dislike?

I would love to have whole dashboard print, like a cockpit, this way the business users can easily print 1 page for managerial reporting.

What do you like best?

I like how Yellowfin evolves fast to fill the gaps in their visualization coverage and I like how easy to administrate and customize the interface.

After a version update in a costumer we observed that some of the created content stopped working in the new version. Fortunately, we achieved to solve the issue with the YF support team.

What do you like best?

What I like best is the easy to use GUI and that it has evolved to maintain the focus on ease of use. It is usual to end with a nice looking result without making a lot of effort.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you use something like the Gartner Magic Quadrant to guide your decisions have a look at niche players or even newcomers. When we started with YF they were not featured in the MQ, however it exceeded our expectations from the first day. Finally, download the trial and have a look at their demo data, it is very useful to have a grasp about how it works and what it can do.

Yellowfin is not widely deployed in North America at this time.

While yellowfin support is responsive and conscientious in their service they're prone to relying on documentation from older versions of their product and supporting technology that are not current. There were also some hiccups when they converted/upgraded their support site recently.

What do you like best?

Yellowfin has comprehensive, leading-edge Data Visualization and analytic capabilities at a fantastic price point. For my firm, we particularly like how well Yellowfin works for cloud solutions and sourcing data from other cloud services via their FOC connectors. We found that we could quickly deploy, scale and provide yellowfin technology for our new Whole-View PaaS offering without headaches from desktop installs, complex licensing or other hidden constraints. Yellowfin the company has proved to be a key partner by responding readily to our needs and showing flexibiility and patience with our firm's requirements.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Yellowfin together with their partners have several options that truly bring down the risk of BI projects. Considering that something like 90% of BI projects fail, I highly recommend starting small and building some success incrementally and then scaling your investment with Yellowfin according to those successes. An analytics program needs to be nurtured to be successful. However, you don't have to spend $100K just to get started.

What do you dislike?

My main dislike with Yellowfin on this project was the some clumsy usability aspects of the View designer. Having said that Yellowfin were very receptive of feedback I provided on how to improve the usability of the view designer. Subsequent minor releases of Yellowfin incrementally improved the View designer. The release of version 7.3 presented a completely rewritten user interface for the view designer that it is now very easy to use.

What do you like best?

The Yellowfin feature that led to the success of this project was the "View" - the business metadata layer that sits between the source data and the reports and dashboards.

The source data for this project had significant shortcomings which by itself made it difficult to meet the project's reporting requirements. The Yellowfin view functionality allowed my to apply and easily maintain frequently changing, complex business logic, and enhance the source system data with business rules that allowed for accurate prediction of future capability of the recruitment process.

The Yellowfin views also made it possible for me to present the complex data structure to the recruitment managers and analysts, and workforce planners in a business-friendly format so they could easily write their own ad hoc reports. The business users only required minimal training to become self-sufficient with Yellowfin for report writing and ad hoc data analysis.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Yellowfin is a great business intelligence and analytics platform. It's focus on usability for end-users and the analysts who support them is it greatest strength. I would consider it the best business intelligence and analytics platform I have used in my career.

In addition to having a great product Yellowfin is a great company to work with. They receptive to product feedback and almost always product improvement suggestions I have made have been implemented in future releases. I have even had a couple of cases where minor improvements were implemented in the monthly patch release following me making the suggestions. In my experience very few software vendors are that responsive.
