Running e-commerce business from front end application to back end application data and report and analytic services on rds..
What do you dislike?
It's highly secured though, admin's will not have access to the infra and OS.
What do you like best?
Never expected DBA's life will be so easy. It's managed database service from cloud market leader amazon web service.
More then anything else they have built in a such a way that it's to manage to admin's. Comes with lot of exciting features like read replica, point in time recovery, automatic snapsshots, backups, master-slave replication etc.
Provides data encryption also and comes with ssl certificate security service.
The best part of the RDS is admin's get to choose the kind of system they want for their respective application. Though it's managed cluster admin's will not have access to the underlying infra and OS.
Logs can be access. Also allows user to optimize the database using configurable parameters.
Comes in different flavors like mysql, MS SQL server, Oracle DB.
Attracts large customer base from Enterprise to start ups. AWS has built which is in compliance with mysql database.
The most important feature I liked personally about RDS is, the master-slave replication. If your RDS is deployed in multiple availability zones, as recommended. One have enjoy the perk of zero downtime or less then 60 seconds of downtime during the database upgrade.
Recommendations to others considering the product
I would like recommed RDS to all the customers ranging from Enterprise/Corp orates and startups.
