Fast and great data processing and statistical analysis tool
What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
I handle large volumes of retail transactions and need SAS for various statistical procedures like univariate , multivariate, ANOVA, ANCOVA and lots of others for various analyses.The benefits of working with SAS are in terms of time saved if no data manipulation is required and a huge library of pre defined and optimized functions to be used in data and procedure steps. We are able to connect SAS with Exadata to utilized the best of both the technologies and it is a WIN situation for us.
What do you dislike?
Though great with statistical analysis, SAS is not as good with data extraction and manipulation compared to say SQL. Say in order to merge two datasets, we have to sort both the datasets on the fields we are merging and sorting a large dataset takes a long time in SAS.
What do you like best?
Base SAS along with other packages cover almost the whole gamut of statistical analysis and techniques.SAS programming syntax can be considered as a high level language which is intuitive and easy to learn compared to other softwares like R.The extensive library of pre defined functions and user defined gives it an edge over other softwares. Further , Macro programming adds a massive scope with both global and local variables.

Though there are other open source and cheaper alternative available, SAS is going to rule for coming years with the kind of support it provides to the enterprises, continuous improvements with latest versions and validated and ever increasing functions library
