What do you dislike?

There are some shortcomings in the development environment that make it challenging to display ad hoc values (variables) on layouts. There are work-arounds but they add an unnecessary layer of complexity. Some complex relationships that are relatively easy to realize in MySQL or Postgres can be difficult to implement in Filemaker.

What do you like best?

It is easy to pick up and learn the basics in Filemaker within a day or two. You can quickly build a simple, flat file database solution from spreadsheets and improve it to a relational database within a few weeks. The support (manuals, training materials and options, community) are outstanding.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're using spreadsheets to track complicated and interrelated data, I strongly recommend Filemaker. If you've used Microsoft Access and found the programming learning curve too steep, Filemaker is a good fit.

It's feature heavy and they have no way to hide what isn't used.

Its UI is relatively appealing and it functions well.

User interface is somewhat old-fashioned, although FMI appears to be taking steps to improve this. Built-in controls are a little dated and limited but this can be overcome with the excellent inline web viewer control.

What do you like best?

I can build a multi-user relational database app for Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad and web out of the box and also read/write external SQL databases and integrate with 3rd party APIs. FileMaker is an excellent tool for integrating various data sources into one place.

If you're looking for a cross-platform database/rapid application development environment with a very shallow learning curve, I highly recommend FileMaker Pro.

AWS Setup can be confusing, especially just for a trial.

What do you like best?

Flexibility, Innovation, Ease of Use. I've been a FM Pro Advanced Developer for nearly 20 years, and I love how it keeps getting better with every version. The company really does listen to its users, and provides what we want. It's such a powerful tool, with a great community of developers always ready to lend a hand and give advice.

Definitely give FM Pro / Advanced a try. It;s limited only by your imagination, and desire to learn and create something great.

Takes time to get use to but overall isn窶冲 bad, wish it would provide highlighting option.

FileMaker is customizable for all of your trafficking needs. It窶冱 keeping my work organized in a dashboard.

Filemaker is not intuitive to start with. It takes some time and on the job training to become familiar with the program.

We use Filemaker as our school database and find it to be very useful for it's different sections of information we need to capture.

I dislike that Filemaker can go down when there are Internet connectivity problems, so it is not always accessible.

I like that Filemaker allows me to organize and store all of my client contact information and photos.

Make sure someone on your team knows how to adapt Filemaker to your individual company's needs.

Server still requires a Mac or Windows computer. Can't run under any of the other Unix flavors. An Android or Chromebook client would also be nice but they can still access via the web page interface.

What do you like best?

This platform is one of the most agile and versatile corporate databases out there. When creating new systems, we can make changes on the fly and have them rolled out to client's in a matter of seconds. Also, my users can have access on mobile iOS devices so the users can use the databases from their iPhone and iPads using the native FileMaker Go iOS App. They have also now integrated file encryption and even better file synching so that you do have the option for offline database use. The Windows and Mac cross platform compatibility is fantastic.

Take the time to partner with an existing Filemaker Developer if your product is going to be complex. Your database will be properly designed from the start and be scalable in the future.
